ExWeb survey results - Who Are You?
image story
Jul 7, 2004 11: 55 EST
Last week ExWeb put up a survey to learn more about who our readers are. Over two hundred replies came in within 30 hours, we really appreciate your effort - 10 of you will be selected for free posters this week. The conclusion of the survey; you are educated, professional and active. And that’s not mere flattery; just take a look at the results.

It is no surprise that of the 400,000 unique visitors to ExplorersWeb every month, nearly 70% call English their first language. Bear in mind too that the survey was not posted on esp.mounteverest.net, the ExplorersWeb Spanish language site that happens to be doubling its readership every month.

What did come as a surprise was the fact that over half of you participate in at least one expedition every year – especially because an expedition is defined as being 30 days or more in length. The expeditions take place in exotic places (you fly there), marking you the leaders and trendsetters in the fast growing generation of active lifestyle individuals! Nearly everyone else who comes to ExWeb go trekking yearly, with 40% at least every second month.

With a 3 to 1 ratio of males to females about half of you are married! ExplorersWeb seems to be good for steady relationships - you look for adventure in healthy places!

Household income averages at $74,000 – an especially high number considering that only 40% of our readers are from the US and that is still higher than the national average. You are not only well off, you are also well educated. 74% have a college or higher, 39% are post-graduate, 24% are Masters and 5% are Doctors.

40% of you stop by ExplorersWeb at least once a day, obviously nearly all of the readers who filled out the survey visit the site at least once a month. Less than 10% of you you visit other adventure websites daily, but around half of you visit them at least monthly.

But what do you read when you’re not ‘online’? Well, over 35% choose National Geographic, but surprisingly enough only 11% of you read NG Adventure. At 17% you prefer Outside magazine and at only 3% you skip the NG Traveler altogether. Instead you grab Climbing, Alpinist, Backpacker or Rock&Ice each at around 10%.

To summarize: You work hard and you play hard. When not out on an extreme expedition you go skiing, climbing, sailing, diving, canoeing, mountainbiking, running, hunting and horse-back riding. You are a wild, sharp, and athletic International bunch of guys at around 38 years old, leaders both professionally and outside your workplace. Your top media adventure choices are National Geographic's classic magazine in print and - ExplorersWeb on the net. We are honored and proud. Thanks for your help with this survey guys. Just imagine, when you think about it - if this survey was made some hundred years ago, your names could well have been Shackelton, Scott, Columbus or Polo. Pretty cool, isn't it...

These results are based on a results from 200 individuals within two days. The margin of error is less than 2%.
