Everest North summit push this minute - audio all the way
May 24, 2004 13: 33 EST
First things first. Check out the voice dispatch from team ExWeb's Dave D’Angelo. He’s all fired up, his first-timers excitement is self-evident. And right there with him is team Italian Everest/K2's Silvio ‘Gnaro’ Mondinelli who is an Everest veteran and appears more reserved in his dispatch. Both these guys are minutes away from everything they have been prepping for these past months (and even years). Here is the latest from the newb and the vet:
Gnaro Mondinelli
“Our team has begun a new attack on the summit even though the weather is not optimal. I am anxious for the hour to come tonight when we leave for the summit. The weather has turned moderate above 8,000m. In the last few days Everest has been wrapped in clouds; wind and snow has continued throughout. We are all aware that these days are decisive for us to reach our objectives.”
Dave D’Angelo
“I don't know what to think right now. I am definitely very fired up, however, I am thinking lots of things. What if I don't make it? It's hard not to let these thoughts enter your head.
Yeah I know it will be there, and I won't do anything stupid, or at least try not to. For some even being here is stupid, maybe. What do you think to yourself when you know the next four days will probably be the toughest, most dangerous, and painful of your life? I know what I am thinking this second though, I'm going to go fucking get this thing. A fifteen year old did it, and a 70 year old did - I should be able to do it too. It's on.”
The images along with Dave’s dispatch are from the latest summiteers and some are from Dave’s climb. We’ve had everything from Microlites and Hanggliders soaring over Everest to Italians without oxygen, Alpine Ascents youngest Seven Summiteer and Abramov's first team standing on top this morning. Tonight Gnaro and Dave are going for the summit - be sure to tune in to Dave's call from the top of the world!
Silvio Mondinelli, Italian climber, who ascended Manaslu in 1993, Shisha Pangma Central-Peak in 1996, Cho Oyu in 1997, Everest, Gasherbrum II and I and Dhaulagiri in 2001, Makalu in 2002 and Kangchenjunga in 2003.
