2004 EBC clinic wrap-up

Our 2004 EBC clinic was a definite success! We saw just about twice as many patients in 2004 as in our first year, despite the fact that there were far fewer expeditions in camp this year. We owe that to better marketing, "contracts" for unlimited visits for expedition teams, increased confidence in our facility and staff, word of mouth, more sponsor support, and good karma!
We treated 168 patients in the 54 days of operation that began April 2, 2004. Most of our patients were climbers or climbing staff (160), and we saw only 8 trekkers. Exactly half of our patients were Nepali. We were surprised and pleased to see an increase in visits from teams who already had a team MD in camp (19 patient visits.)
Here's an interesting stat: only 4 helicopter landings in EBC in 2004 (there were ~30 in 2003!) This is probably directly related to the tragic crash that occurred last season and the very vivid reminder (that crashed helicopter greets everyone who walks into EBC as it lies just off the main trail.) Use of helis was much more judicious this season, and only 2 of our clinic patients were evacuated by heli directly out of EBC. Fortunately, we had no deaths in base camp this year.
Our most common diagnoses in clinic in 2004:
Upper respiratory infection/pharyngitis 30 Khumbu cough 17 Bronchitis 14 Diarrhea 13 Acute gastroenteritis 8 Gastritis 5 Sinusitis 5 Dental 5 Frostbite/frostnip 5 Pneumonia 4 Altitude counseling 4 HAPE 4 Periodic breathing/insomnia 4 Back strain 4 Blisters 4 Lacerations 4 AMS 2 Retinal hemorrhage 2 HACE 1
Stay tuned for altitude research updates and clinic news. I'm already working with one of our sponsors on an exciting new idea to expand our clinic services in 2005...details to come!
