With a bounce in their step Berg Everest starts summit bid
10:34 a.m. EDT Oct 17, 2003
It’s officially go time. After spending some time down in the valley recuperating in the thick air, the Berg team is back in Base Camp and has a renewed bounce in their step and a glimmer in their eye. Well rested and acclimatized, the team will head out tomorrow for their summit bid.
The sherpas have already been to the South Col, Camp IV, 7900m, and fixed the ropes up there. Currently they’re back down in Camp II, 6400m, and getting some rest. When teams go for a summit bid they typically make the leap from Base Camp to Camp II, passing by Camp I all together. With any luck, the team plans to go for the summit on Wednesday the 22nd. This of course is tentative and largely depends on the weather and how the route above Camp IV looks.
The sherpas had a tough time fixing to Camp IV with the deep snow at the Geneva Spur. They’ll have to see what lies ahead and act accordingly. Down in Base Camp, the team should have already enjoyed some fresh Irish fruitcake sent from Dublin and hand delivered to Base Camp – probably the most expensive fruitcake ever considering shipping and handling. Maegan has also been busy chatting and being interviewed by various visitors eager to find out more about her ambitions to ski Everest. Let the climbing begin!
Berg Adventures has the only South Side expedition this fall. They have a real challenge ahead of them these upcoming weeks having to fix and prepare Everest entirely by themselves. One of the expedition members, Maegan Carney plans to ski down from the summit.
