When things go wrong

Have you ever needed medical assistance abroad or needed to be evacuated? Evacuations don’t run cheap – emergency helicopter service from Everest Base Camp will run you a couple grand at the least. And if you’ve ever been in a hospital for a couple days, you know how quickly the bills run up, and how expensive they can get. Getting hit by a car can cost ten’s of thousands of dollars. Unlike the United States, many drivers in India, Nepal, and other 3rd world countries aren’t necessarily insured – leaving you with the bill.

Travel insurance is a reasonable way to make sure that you have the coverage you need, when you need it. TFG Global Insurance Solutions Ltd, has plans that offer up to 300,000 USD travel insurance coverage (for one trip) for about 3 to 8 dollars a day, depending upon your age. This can cover your medical bill, and helicopter evacuations from anywhere in the world – the brochure says, “The insurance shall provide worldwide coverage.”

Sounds great, huh – about 150 USD for a month’s coverage in a foreign land? Well as with all insurance policies, there are a couple rules. For one, they won’t cover cosmetic surgery, unless maybe a falling rock crushed your nose. So for those of you heading over to Thailand and are fancying a boob or nose job, not going to happen.

In addition, for those of you going to visit nuclear power plants or fancied a ride on a Russian Atomic icebreaker, if something goes really bad and you grow a 6th finger, “nuclear reactions or radioactive fallout,” is not covered either. Also, for the mercenaries out there, you will not be covered if you are traveling and get hurt fighting a war. Besides that and a few other stipulations, most of what you do on a vacation, or even an 8000m expedition is covered by the insurance.
