Vikings for big mountains skiing expedition
12:44 p.m. EST Feb 17, 2004
Swedish Tomas Olsson and Norwegian Tormod Grandheim are up for some big mountains skiing this fall. The guys plan to climb Shisha Pangma and Cho Oyu without sherpas and oxygen, and ski down from the summits.
The expedition is the first part of preparations for an attempt to ski from the summit of Mount Everest in 2006.
Tomas Olsson and Tormod Granheim are both living in Chamonix, France, where they have skied many of the classic lines; the north face of Aiguille du Midi in 2001 and Couloir du Diables (Mont Blanc du Tacul) in 2003.
In Autumn 2003 the duo rehearsed for the 2004 project by skiing from the summit of two 7000+ mountains, Muztagh Ata (7546m) & Kuksay Peak (7186m) in China.
"This was actually a project never before fully realised," says the team.
The expedition photographer, Swedish Jonas Tufvesson, is based in Vail, USA. Jonas has been published in American magazines such as Climbing and Rock & Ice. He is a member of the GreatShots photo agency and his pictures are currently part of a campaign for Fuji Film.
The head sponsors are Bergans of Norway - a Norwegian outdoors company; and Silva Sweden - that makes well-known compasses and GPS devices.
