Viesturs for Annapurna 2005
Jan 26, 2005 14: 10 EST
The two biggest American events in Himalaya this spring are Ed Viestur's final summit (Annapurna) and the American(s) joining the Russian team to Everest North Face.
A press conference in Moscow on Jan 28 will detail the Everest NF team. As for Annapurna, Ed just made it official that he will be returning this spring.
When Ed Viesturs scales the 26,545 foot mountain, he will become the first American to join the small number of climbers who have stood atop the summits of all 14 8,000 meter peaks in the world, and climbed them without oxygen.
Everest summit no 6
Ed was supposed to do a double header last year, acclimatizing on Everest and continuing to Anna straight after. He summited Everest for the sixth time, but announced Anna a no-go.
Ed made Everest together with Veikka Gustafsson, David Breashears, Robert Schauer, Jimmy Chin and Amy Bullard along with seven climbing Sherpa's - he was co-expedition leader (with David Breashears) of a film project for Working Title Films and Universal Pictures.
Cho Oyu/Anna double header
This year, Ed plans on the same strategy as last time - a double header to minimize his time on the very deadly Annapurna. He'll acclimatize on Cho Oyu and then go to Annapurna for a hopefully rapid ascent via the North Face.
Old buddies on third attempt
Ed's expedition partner is once again long time friend Veikka Gustafsson and possibly a few other climbers. They will use no oxygen or Sherpa support, and this will be their third attempt on Annapurna. Edviesturs.com will have daily updates, late April the dispatches will be webcast exclusively on MSN.com.
