On March 26th, Lhakpa Gelu set the Everest speed ascent record with a time of 10 hr and 56 min. The previous record holder, Pemba Dorjie, only had it for 3 days after summiting in 12 hr and 45 min. His time bested the late Babu Chirri Sherpa’s record of 16 hr and 56 min, set back in 2000.

All of base camp gathered to greet him as he came down from the icefall. Dr. Luanne Freer of the base camp medical clinic was there and has sent back some video of crowd's cheering Lhakpa’s arrival.
