Tonight's summit push update
May 30, 2005 18: 35 EST
Among the teams who expected to head up today and tomorrow are 7-summits second bunch with Kikstra/Abramov, Singapore, JG, Exploradus, Duncan, Img 2nd team and other.
IMG reports that they have decided for a go despite a snow squall and wind that came through on Monday afternoon and evening (Nepal time). Walter Laserer, Renate Schachinger, Rex Pemberton and Ed Diffendal have already left Camp 4 and begun to move up, with the others at Camp 4 brewing and preparing now to leave camp soon.
Adventure weather forecasts
According to the weather forecast, the jet stream is still fairly close to the Mount Everest area, which is why the winds can be a bit on the stronger side. The core of the jet remains about 5-7 degrees north of the area.
Latest satellite imagery shows a number of clouds surrounding the mountain, but they should stay below 8000m. Expect winds at the summit to be 15-20 m/s (30-40 knots) today and increase to 20-25 m/s (50 knots) on June 2nd before easing to 15-18 m/s on the 3rd. The 4th could have lighter winds as the jet pushes to the north. Below the Summit, look for winds around 10-15 m/s with an increase to 20 m/s near 7500m on June 1st-2nd. By the 3rd (Friday), the winds may ease to 5-10 m/s.
Below 7500m - heavy showers are possible late on June 3rd to the 4th.
