"There IS peace in Nepal!"
10:19 a.m. EST Jan 12, 2004
As previously reported, Lance Trumbull, director of the Everest Peace Project expedition, has organized a team of climbers representing many different faiths and cultures to climb the world’s highest peak this spring in the name of peace. It’s a lofty goal, particularly in light of frequent headlines of violence and unrest in the region… headlines that could be ripped from many regions of the world these days. Yet in the face of it, Lance continues his efforts for peace and lent his own voice to a recent rally in Kathmandu. He wrote the following about those events:
“There has been much reported violence and unrest reported in Nepal as of late--with the continued Maoist problems and a government not working hard at resolving the issues...the main hope may lie with the normal people of Nepal making their voices heard. All over the country there have and continue to be peaceful demonstrations of peace and tolerance throughout the country-where people of several faiths have joined together to bring about an end to the violence that has plagued the country for many years.
“There IS peace in Nepal--it lies within most of the hearts of the people; now, we just hope that the government and the Maoists will listen to the people.”
Over the next several weeks leading up to expedition’s Climb for Peace, the Everest Peace Project will update their Web site with images sent from Nepal: the mountains, the people, the festivals... "to help give a better understanding of this Himalayan Kingdom.”
The Everest Peace Project aims to promote peace and religious tolerance. The Climb for Peace expedition is comprised of members from different religions, cultures and countries, coming together to climb Mount Everest.
