Shisha Pangma Summit take two - Catalan "Gudi" on top
Sep 27, 2004 18: 03 EST
Osona-Maresme Catalan team members Josep Rovira, Romano Esteve, Jordi Godayol and Joaqum Nadal faced their first 8000+ peak without supplementary O2 or high altitude porters. The mountain was Shisha Pangma through the classic Chinese route. This morning, Jordi Godayol, "Gudi", made it.
Here's their latest:
"Friday the expedition decided to begin a summit push. One of the good reasons was that their climbing permit expires October 3.
During the weekend gear was hauled to C2 and C3 without returning to BC. Even though the weather has improved, the conditions are extreme, with temperatures of -7ºc with strong winds.
Jordi Godayol and Joaqum Nadal were able to ascend to Camp 2 Saturday (6,950 meters). But when he woke up the next day, Joaqum had a very sore throat. He could not drink or eat, and decided to descend.
Romano Esteve waited for him in camp 1, and helped him all the way down to Base Camp. Jordi Godayol, "Gudi", along with an Italian (Mario?), a Pole, a Swede (Fredrik?) and the others sherpas climbed Sunday to Camp 3 (7,450 meters).
At 2 am in the morning, they started their summit push. The climb was difficult, in addition to the fatigue and the lack of oxygen, they had to scale ice slopes, walk on slush and to surpass big rocks. In a brief phone communication with Base Camp, it was confirmed that "Gudi" made the summit at 8:30 am (Catalan time), 12:30 pm (Nepal time). All members of the expedition are very happy."
Earlier today an Italian team reported that at 2.20 pm local Tibetan time (10,10 in Italy) expedition leader Mario Vielmo and Cristina Castagna reached the summit of Shisha Pangma.
