Quick check of the coolest 2005 climbs in Himalaya
Mar 16, 2005 11: 54 EST
With all of the climbers announcing their Himalayan plans, it's easy to lose track. So let's run a quick check of some of the coolest expeditions this season.
Lonely climbs
Annapurna will blow up, and the coolest expedition there is Piotr Pustelniks lonely team of four on the South side. Everest has tons of visits scheduled, but most eyes will be glued to the Superculoir and the three climbers there. The Dhauligiri/Annapurna double headers are serious stuff as well.
New route
Another noteworthy climb ongoing right now is Inaki's solo attempt on Shisha Pangma. And a big event is of course Yuri Koshelenko and Iljas Tuhvatullin new route on either Gaurishankar or Menlungtse’s North faces – two of the most challenging Himalayan big walls - much like the Jannu North Face.
Big goal
In the Big Goals category is of course Silvio Mondinelli's 5-in-1 plan; he wants the 14 8000ers and he wants them now.
“I can't waste much time. I'm getting old!” he told ExplorersWeb yesterday, only half joking (check interview) . He does want to climb Annapurna, perhaps by a different route than the one Viesturs and his team will be climbing. But afterwards he plans on climbing four more 8000ers! If he succeeds, he'll finish the year as a brand new member of the 14, 8000er summiteers’ club.
Big walls, big dreams and big plans. That's the season ahead in 2005 high Himalaya mountaineering.
