May 23, 2005 17: 37 EST
Joao Garcia summited Lhotse last Saturday, at around 1.00 p.m. local time, according to emails from Lisbon and Nomada Equipamentos Outdoor. His climbing partner Helder Santos had to turn back due to AMS. Joao is best known for his summit of Everest without oxygen on May 18th, 1999 with Pascal Debrouwer.

Joao is an unguided member of Dan Mazur's Lhotse expedition this year. Born on June 11, 1967 in Portugal, Joao has many climbs in the Alps, Pyrenees and South America. Lhotse became his 6th 8000er. Joao has earlier summited Cho Oyu, 1993; Dhaulagiri, 1994; Gasherbrum 2, 2001; Gasherbrum I; and Everest on May 18th, 1999. All without oxygen, according to the sources.
