On the road to Ama Dablam
10:13 a.m. EDT Oct 17, 2003
The Adventure Consultants crew is on their way to Ama Dablam. After a short stay in Kathmandu they made their way via plane to Lukla and started up towards the town of Phakding, where they stayed yesterday evening. Today they should have arrived in the town of Namche Bazaar, basically the capital of the Khumbu area.
At 14,000 ft, this small village is notched into the side of a hill and is where a lot of local transactions and trading happens. On the weekends there is a ‘Bazaar’ and folks from the nearby towns come by to sell and buy what they need for the week.
This is also a great stop for some acclimatization – the trek from Phakding is very steep and there's lots of elevation gained. It’s a great spot to hang out, there’s television, phones, a museum, and even a higher speed Internet connection. It’s also a good place to buy any climbing equipment that you might have left behind. The team will most likely spend the day tomorrow there and rest. After that it’s just a few short days to Ama Dablam’s Base Camp.
Adventure Consultants is headed to Southwest Ridge of Ama Dablam this fall. Three-time Everest summiteer, Luis Benitez is leading the month-long expedition to the 6,828m "Jewel of the Khumbu." Adventure Consultants is an IGO 8000 member and has a strong reputation among climbers for its very high standards, experienced guides and sherpas.
