This spring only! Kangchenjunga and Makalu 50% off

While the international community shows its concern for Nepal's political situation, the new government has quickly taken measures in order to boost mountain tourism, which means great news for climbers:They have slashed the price of climbing permits for Kanchenjunga and Makalu in half for the “golden jubilee celebration of the first ascent on these mountains.”

A cabinet meeting made the decision this week, and the news was confirmed today by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.

Climbing Makalu and Kanchenjunga will cost US$5,000 per team with a maximum of seven climbers. The royalty rate for the rest of Nepal’s 8000ers is exactly double. Everest is more expensive at US$ 70,000 for a seven member team.

But you better act fast!

The measure is only effective from March 1 through June 30, 2005. That means no medium-term plans are valid. Those interested in the bargain will need to launch their expeditions soon. Teams already planning on climbing Makalu and Kangchenjunga will surely benefit if they haven’t paid the royalties yet. Climbers heading for other mountains may change their minds if they are still on time… and if they are ready to attempt Makalu or Kangchenjunga.

Nepal's authorities are now planning 50th anniversary celebrations: “The golden jubilee of Mt. Makalu will be observed on May 15 and that of Kangchenjunga on May 25,” official sources said.
