Mexicans, Canadians for Everest, Namche got hot-spot
14:13 p.m. EST Mar 23, 2004
The Mexican alpinists participating in the Mexican-Canadian expedition Everest 2004 arrived in Lukla yesterday. Andrés, Alejandro, Luis and Juan, flew to Lukla to begin their trek towards Everest Base Camp. Lukla is the last village Everest hopefuls fly into before trekking in to Namche Bazaar.

The Mexicans expect to reach Everest Base Camp towards the last days of March, when they will join the Canadians Richard Cartier and Martin Boileau. As soon as their camp equipment is installed they will begin their dispatches.

Dr. Luanne is also in Namche today, together with the IMAX team, and she found a hot-spot! Using a friend’s computer she is transmitting wirelessly from a tea house in Namche, about 300 yards away from the internet hub set up by the same guy, Tsering Gyaltzen, who did the internet café last year. Luanne also got her printer back from Tsering, who borrowed it last year for the Everest base camp internet cafe. With printer in hand Luanne can now distribute the days weather forecasts to expeditions on the south side.

Along with the Mexican-Canadian expedition there will be some other Canadians on Everest this year, including Ron Hoglin from Vancouver and Ben Webster, who will be part of a Discovery Channel television documentary titled: "The Everest Story". Ben will be using technology from March Networks that will measure his vitals to be transmitted at a later point via satellite. Claude St-Hilaire, Mario Dutil and Maxime Jean, from the province of Quebec who have been getting ready for two years, will also be attempting Everest. Another Quebecer, Patrick Bernier from the Abitibi region will climb the north face of Everest on the Tibetan side.

The Mexican-Canadian Everest team comprises of two Quebecois and four Mexicans, "bound together by friendship and respect,” Andres Delgado, Luis Espinoza , Alejandro Ochoa Reyes, Martin Boileau, Richard Cartierts. The climbers will attempt Everest without oxygen (a first for Canada if successful). After Everest, Delgado will travel to Pakistan for a K2 double header.
