Ministry deliberates on Everest speed ascent dispute
09:24 a.m. EDT Jun 30, 2003
In the past couple of weeks Pemba Dorje Sherpa, a former Everest speed ascent record holder, filed a formal complaint to Nepal’s ministry concerning Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa.

Pemba’s speed ascent of Everest was broken just days after he set it by Lhakpa Gelu, and Pemba is now saying that Lhakpa has made false claims about his record.

Though the Ministry has not made an official statement as of yet, according to NepalNews, initial reports show that Lhakpa’s record is valid. On June 17th, Lhapka, along with several witnesses who were on the mountain during his climb, visited the Ministry.

In addition to witnesses, Lhakpa also brought summit pictures of him with Appa Sherpa. The Ministry will reveal the results of their investigation soon.
