Maoists stepping up attacks in Nepal
Jan 20, 2005 17: 41 EST
Mid December the Shisha winter climbers were on a roof top in Nyalam as Maoist rebels ambushed a military patrol in eastern Nepal, triggering the bloodiest weeks in Nepal since the Maoist insurgency resumed in the country.
As off a few days back the climbers are stuck in a blizzard in Shisha BC, waiting for the yaks to get to them through dense snow fall. Returning to Nepal, the guys might encounter a deja vu of the past December events.
30 killed, 350 kidnapped, 5 reporters captured in past two days
Close to 30 people were killed today in a shootout between Maoists and troops in eastern Nepal, near the Indian district of Darjeeling.
Two days ago, around 350 students from different schools in Nepal were abducted by Maoist rebels, 50 has since escaped. The Maoists also captured 5 five journalists.
Government is desperate
The government is desperate and ready to talk with the Maoists at "any place, any time and on any agenda," but the Maoists say they will continue to fight the regime in Katmandu.
India and Nepal have signed an extradition treaty to check growing links between Maoist rebels in both countries. Currently, India and the US are the two biggest military aid providers to Nepal.
United States warn nationals
Numbers vary but it is estimated that somewhere between 7-10,000 people have lost their lives in Nepal since the uprise in 1996. Amnesty International said that only since the breakdown of the ceasefire in 2003, it is feared that over 2,000 people have been killed.
The Maoist situation is now clearly affecting the tourism industry of Nepal. Several Western nations, including the United States, have warned its nationals against visiting Nepal.
