Live from Kathmandu: Everest in 10 days!
Mar 18, 2005 12: 49 EST
Here we go! Teams are sending out departure alerts and excitement is in the air. The Basecamp clinic gang is already underway, this morning Luanne mailed a quick note: "Hello from Kathmandu - We're up and running! RBGAN works like a charm; I'm writing from the roof of the Hotel Marshyandi in Thamel. Technology is so COOL! Looks like we'll fly to Lukhla Monday and hit the trail then."
Vacuumed all the food
And here's from Jean Pavillard: "Everest 10 days!!! Almost packed, still few details to finalize. The team is ready. Monica Kalozdi, Tom Torkelson, Sherpa Dawa, Sherpa Karsang and myself. We are bringing two new tents from Helsport in addition to what we already have. One for ABC and one for the high camps. I vacuumed all the food, and set satellite communication."
No escaping Mom's watchful eye
Jean and his client Monica Kalozdi from New Orleans have climbed together for 8 years; Matterhorn, Mt Blanc, Kili, Aconcagua, Vinson, Denali, and Cho Oyu - now they will hit Everest. Monica is the business exec mom, who will check her kids homework from the mountain - over satellite phone! Dispatches have already begun on JP's website.
Jean Pavillard is a mountain guide in Chamonix, France. He helped heart transplant survivor Kelly Perkins and her husband Craig to reach the top of Matterhorn 4,478 m (14,693 ft), dubbed by early climbers "the awful mountain". With them were Tim and Michael Brown of Serac films; Michael filmed Kelly and Craig's ascent.
