Latest from the Baruntse tent "This one is for Patrick Berhault"
May 4, 2004 18: 11 EST
As we reported early this morning, the Baruntse team (Simone, Denis and Camos) reached the Kali Himal (Black Summit) of Baruntse, also known as the North Summit at 7014m via a new route up the North Face. The main summit is at 7129m.
Late night Simone sent an SMS out the minute he reached the Kali Himal, then descending towards BC foregoing the main summit because of high winds.
" The ridge to the main summit does not seem difficult, but the wind is so strong that we risk to blow off."
At 9:30 a.m (Italian time) today, another call came through:
“Hi.
We are back in the tent and everybody are fine. It was a really cold day today, sunny but with very strong winds.
All three of us reached the summit of Khali Himal after 36 pitches. We will dedicate this route to Patrick Berhault.
The view from the summit was great, only the wind was really disturbing. The route is very tough especially for the steepness and the high difficulties.
We will have another hard day tomorrow. We will reach the saddle and from there continue to the first part of our route and than go to base camp. We have enough rope - 200 meters of fix ropes, 50 m Kevlar and 3 dynamic ropes - that I will take from the last part of the route and bring up.
Ciao till tomorrow
Simone & Co.
P.S. Tomorrow I will send you wonderful pictures.”
First off, the Italian/Kazakh combo Denis Urubko and Simone Moro, along with Denis Urubko and Camos, attempted the North Wall on Baruntse, 7129m. They reached the Kali Himal (Black Summit) of Baruntse, also known as the North Summit at 7014m via a new route up the North Face. The true summit was left untouched due to hard wind. Next, Simone and Denis will move to Annapurna’s North Face, attempting a new line on it.
