Kazakh climbers in Cho Oyu middle camp - climbing gear in Delhi
image story

Ed's expedition is not the only action on Cho Oyu right now. Kazakhstan climbers Maxut Zhymayev and Vassily Pivtsov enjoy each other's company when out climbing (the image is of Maxut, left, and Vassily, right, on the summit of Nanga Parbat in 2003).

They reached middle camp on Cho Oyu yesterday and today they're going for ABC. Several days ago, when the guys arrived in New Delhi, the airline company lost all their climbing gear. They tried to get it back in Kathmandu, but without luck. Now what to do? Fellow Russian climbers on the spot helped out, and Gia Tortladze even footed the bill!

No stopping the Kazakh's, gear or not - they are well into their climb on Cho Oyu!

Maxut Zhumayev left for Kathmandu April 13, heading for Cho Oyu together with Vassiliy Pivtsov (they are both from the Central Sport Club of Kazakhstan Army). They may join the Siberia Cho Oyu Expedition (Gleb Sokolov, Yuri Uteshev +3) which started April 17. Serguey Bogomolov and Gia Tortladze have joined the Spanish Manaslu expedition. Yuri Koshelenko goes for Melungtse with Nickolay Totmjanin and Carlos Buhler.

Max has Shisha Pangma, G1 & G2, Kangchenjunga, Nanga Parbat Kinshoffer route, Broad Peak and Makalu West ridge - all without oxygen.

Vassily has G1, Kangchenjunga, Shisha Pangma, Nanga Parbat Kinshoffer route, Broad Peak, and Makalu West ridge - all without oxygen.

The climbers are part of a national team of Kazakhstan climbers with the intent to summit all fourteen 8,000m peaks in time to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union, coming up in December 2006.
