Kathmandu Maoist General strike Tuesday/Wednesday - Emergency bus for tourists
Sep 27, 2004 17: 03 EST
After the weekend's summit fever on Cho Oyu and Shisha, climbers are heading back to civilization: A proper bed, plenty of food and a hot shower in Kathmandu. Perhaps they shouldn’t hurry though... if they don’t want to find the Capital of Nepal paralized again.
Once again, the Maoists have called for a “bandh” (general strike) in the valley, for this Tuesday and Wednesday.
This time, the government is trying new measures to minimize the effects.
According to Nepal News, The “Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has decided to provide emergency bus services in the Kathmandu valley for tourists during the two-day general strike, NTB officials said.
The bus services will be available between Tribhuvan International Airport and different parts of the city. Likewise, the government has called on the general public and transportation owners to run their vehicles and also has ensured that government will provide compensation if there is any damage during the bandh.
The guerrilla have imposed the strike as a protest to the recent killing of two guerrilla-members in Eastern Nepal. The government Monday declared high security alert across the country in view of possible security threats during the two-day general strike, which affects to different parts of the country, including the Kathmandu valley.
