May 7, 2004 12: 52 EST
The news came in last night; the West-Peak of Kangchenjunga, Yalung Kang (8505m) was reached by the Korean, Um Hong-Gil and two Nepali Sherpas, Pasang Namgel and Phur Gyalzen.
Um is the 9th person to reach the summit of all 14 eight-thousanders. To date he has 16 total summits of 8000+ mountains, Everest 3 times.
9 members of the 2004 Korea Yalungkang Expedition team is presently at Kangch. Permit is valid 75 days from 22nd of March 2004, under the leadership of Cho Dong-Sik, of South Korea.
Kangchenjunga (8586m), also known as the “Five Treasures of the Great Snow,” is an immense mountain mass situated on the Sikkim-Nepal border and is the most easterly of the Himalayan peaks.
The peak was once thought to be the tallest mountain in the world. To date, only 185 climbers have summited Kangchenjunga and 40 have died. Statistically, Kangch is the fourth most dangerous mountain above 8000 and the third tallest.
Um Hong-Gil completion of all 14 8000ers came with Shisha Pangma in 2001, almost 13 years after his first ascent of an 8000er.
