Kangchenjunga final summit push in 9 hours
12:05 p.m. EDT May 9, 2003
Carlos, Mario, Silvio, and Christian are all up at 7700m and getting ready for their final summit push!

They left yesterday from base camp and reached Camp II at 7000m. In spite of the recent storm, the team found their equipment and supplies still intact and in, “perfect state." The next 9 hours will be spent hydrating, eating, and resting for the big push.

Silvio and Carlos were on Annapurna together last autumn and did not make the summit due to poor weather and deep snow. This past winter Silvio was a part of a Broad Peak winter ascent, and also did not make it. These climbers are due for a summit!

All members on this team have 8000m experience and are strong mountaineers. Silvio Mondinelli has summited 7, 8000m peaks. Chrisitan Kuntner has summited 11, 8000m peaks including Everest without oxygen. Mario Merelli has summited Everest, and Carlos Pauner has climbed Makalu and K2.

Kangchenjunga, 8586m, is the third highest mountain in the world. It was first summited in 1955 and was the last of the big three to be climbed (Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga.) Kangch is a more difficult climb than Everest and has only had 172 summits. 40 have lost their lives on this mountain giving it a very high fatality rate – 23%.
