Is there something in the water?
11:53 a.m. EST Feb 9, 2004
Simon Murray just became the oldest person to ski to the South Pole at the age of 63 and last year Yuichiro Miura became the oldest person to summit Everest at the age of 70. Babies, that’s what these guys are compared to Yuichiro’s dad, Keizo. On February 15th he will turn 100 years old.
Is it something in the genes or something in the food? Keizo will be celebrating is 100th birthday in Salt Lake City, Utah with 4 generations of his family and over 100 of his friends. Hey, when you live that long, you’re going to have a lot of friends!
Keizo’s son, Yuichiro, and his grandson, Gota, both summited Everest last spring. Previous to the younger Miuras’ Everest ascent last year, Keizo when to Mt. Blanc with them to do some skiing at the age of 99. Keizo is well known in Japan being a pioneer in skiing and also a mountaineering cameraman. Heck, he might be older than snow!
To give some perspective, Keizo was 8 when the Titanic sunk in 1912, he also skis more than 120 days a year. Pretty darn incredible. From February 26th, until March 2nd, Keizo and company will descend upon Salt Lake City, Utah to ski at Snowbird, the Miura’s favorite ski resort. If you’d like to see the oldest living skier tearing it up in Utah’s fresh powder snow, you’ll know where to find him!
Keizo’s son, Yuichiro, and grandson, Gota summited Everest last year on one of ExplorersWeb’s favorite expeditions. These guys spent 4 days above 8000m getting ready for their summit bid. They also had fun skiing above Camp II and sending back video of it. All this came 33 years after Yuichiro skied down Everest’s Lhotse face with the aid of a parachute. A truly amazing family!
