Inaki Ochoa and Carlos Pauner speed climb to Cho Oyu Summit
Sep 28, 2004 10: 22 EST
Spanish Carlos Pauner and Iñaki Ochoa summited Cho Oyu this morning in two separate climbs. Pauner left from C2 only days after reaching BC, and Iñaki ran up straight from ABC, reaching the top in 16 hours! They both climbed without oxygen support.
Iñaki summited this morning (07.31 CET, 11.16 local time). Inaki left ( 5.650 m) at midnight, and summited in 11 hours 16 minutes, alter climbing almost 2600 vertical meters without supplementary O2.
This is his third 8000er this year after Makalu and K2. This is also the third summit of Cho Oyu for Iñaki, who previously climbed it in 1993 and 2001. With this summit, Inaki has 12 8000+: 9 main, 3 repeated (Cho Oyu), 1 secondary (Shisha Central). Annapurna, Shisha Pangma, Manaslu, Kangchenjunga and Dhaulagiri are still to go.
Minutes after Iñaki, Carlos Pauner reached the summit as well. Pauner had launched his summit bid from Camp 2 (7100m). He had climbed from BC on Sunday, with a total time of 26 hours from ABC to Summit. This is the second 8000+ peak for Pauner in a year, after GI and his fifth 8000+ peak on the 14’s list.
Iñaki mentioned intense cold, “much colder than any other time I’ve sumited Cho Oyu”.
Both climbers were back at C3 at 1:45 pm local time.
Navarrese climber Iñaki Ochoa is currently leading ‘a group of friends’ on Cho Oyu normal route. This year he summited Makalu in spring and K2 in summer. Before that, he reached the summit of Cho Oyu twice (1993 and 2001), GI (1996), GII (1996), Lhotse (1999), Everest (2001), Nanga Parbat (2003) and Broad Peak (2003). He has also summited Shisha Pangma Central (1995
Carlos Pauner was born in Jaca (Huesca, Spain) in 1964. Cho Oyu is his fifth 8000+ peak on the 14’s list. Carlos has summited K2, Makalu, Kangchenjunga and GI. He has reached the summit ridge of Broad Peak and attempted Everest and Annapurna (south side).
