Iñaki Ochoa reaches Shisha Pangma BC
Mar 9, 2005 10: 17 EST
Spaniard Iñaki Ochoa is in Shisha Pangma BC, ready to launch a solo bid on the mountain. He reached Chinese BC in Tibet on March 4. “Weather conditions are awful with strong wind and indescribable cold,” he stated.
Braving the storm
Still, Iñaki climbed a nearby 5800m peak for a better view of Shisha’s route conditions. “It looks OK, although I won’t be sure until I actually start climbing.” The climber will be completely alone on the mountain except for a Sherpa cook who will remain in BC, at 5030m. They were expecting a small caravan of yak drivers yesterday, loaded with food and climbing gear.
Looking good so far
Ochoa spent a few weeks in Nepal trekking up the Khumbu Valley to acclimatize before heading for Tibet. He reported on the political situation as being fairly quiet in Kathmandu, for foreigners at least, but was concerned about road blocks, as he intended to enter Tibet by road. According to his latest dispatch, he has made it to the other side of the border without further problems.
The plan
Shisha Pangma’s solo ascent will be Iñaki’s first goal this season. Afterwards, he will join Pete Guggemos and Italians Nives Meroi, Romano Benet, and Luca Vuerich to climb Dhaulagiri. Along with the Italians, he will then move to Annapurna’s north side where he will share a permit with American Ed Viesturs.
Iñaki Ochoa de Olza (born in Pamplona, Spain, 1967) is currently involved in completing the 14 8000+, having already summited nine of them: Cho Oyu three times (1993, 2001, and 2004), K2 (2004), Makalu (2004), GI (1996), GII (1996), Lhotse (1999), Everest (2001), Nanga Parbat (2003), and Broad Peak (2003). He has also summited Shisha Pangma Central (1995).
His targeted peaks for 2005 are Shisha Pangma, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna.
