A 1 in 10 year storm
12:14 p.m. EDT May 8, 2003
The first full scale damage reports are coming in from the North side. It was written about in other Internet media that the Toyota Global Extreme’s team Camp I, 7000m, was completely destroyed. However, in an audio dispatch from one of the team’s guides, Chris Warner, he said that the damage was not as bad as it was made out to be.

Russell Brice’s Himex team planned on heading up to start rebuilding their camps today or tomorrow. They have called this past storm a probably 1 in 10 year occurrence. Fortunately this commercial outfit has many resources and will be able to make repairs and replace lost gear. Other teams, however, do not have the resources to do this and are starting to leave.

The team is hopefull they did not loose too much personal gear at Camp I. Through the telescope, they can see that Camp II has most likely been completely destroyed. Based upon this, they are assuming the same for Camp III. A concern the team does have, however, is the status of their oxygen cache at Camp II – this piece of gear is not easily replaced.
