Himalaya 2005: Gerfried Göschl for Shisha Pangma and Everest w/o O2

Austrian Gerfried Göschl is leading a team on Shisha Pangma this spring. However, Shisha is just the first stage of his double header, and a great way to avoid dangerous and numerous acclimatization trips on his second target: Everest without oxygen.

Gerfried Göschl often climbs with his brother, Rainer Wolfgang. The Austrian brothers were born in separate years, but oddly enough on the same day, October 3rd. So far they’ve climbed Cho Oyu, Gasherbrum II, Aconcagua, and Muztagh Ata together. Last summer they attempted a new route on GII, but had to turn around because of weather and avalanche hazards. They ended up summiting by means of the Normal Route.

This year, Göschl is leading the 11-member international team of the Northland Professional Shisha Pangma expedition with friends Hubert Rieger and Günther Unterberger. Their latest update to ExWeb yesterday had them in Nyalam, leaving for Shisha Pangma BC.

Switching base camps

After Shisha, Gerfried will race over to Everest North side: A couple of rest days in Tingri is all he needs to get ready. Already acclimatized, Gerfried will launch a summit bid straight from ABC without supplementary Oxygen. Gerfried’s strategy is simple: He will wait in ABC for a weather window and, as soon as it opens he will run for the summit, making two bivouacs on the way, at 7600m and 8150m.

The Everest weather window usually opens between May 17 and May 26. By then Gerfried will be ready and waiting for his luck on the big E.

Gerfried Göschl (32) was born in Styria, Austria. He is a member of Alpine Rescue Team Gesaeuse. He has summited Cho Oyu, Muztagh Ata (7546m), Aconcagua, and G2.

Northland Professional expedition consists in Austrian Hubert Rieger (31) and Günther Unterberger (38) – both with previous experience in the Alps and South American Andes.

Other members of the Shisha Pangma Expedition are: Georg Wenzl (26) and Hans Wenzl (34) from Austria; Dr. Andrea Lakatos (39), Dr. Helga Schubert (44), Thomas Scherzer (25), Martin Nuess (30), and Norbert Linz (37) from Germany; and Elio Schlijen (33) from Holland.
