First black African going for Everest summit tonight
11:36 a.m. EDT May 25, 2003
Climbers on the South Side of Everest are going for it tonight. Right about now the Jagged Globe and Swiss/German Bad Heilbrunner teams are leaving Camp IV, 7900m, to go for their final summit push. Further down the mountain somewhere is Lhakpa Gelu speeding up from base camp in an attempt to set an Everest speed ascent record.

Tonight Sibusiso Vilane, a member on the Jagged Globe team could be the first black African to summit Everest. Earlier this season, Deyshun Deysel, a woman with the Discovery South African team was attempting to become the first black person to summit Everest as well. The team has since aborted their expedition.

Another climber on the Jagged Globe team, Borge Ousland is going for the three poles tonight - (North Pole, South Pol, and Everest). He has already done the South Pole and was the first ever to ski to the North Pole solo and unsupported from Russia. To date only 14 people in the entire world have completed the Three Poles.
