First Everest casualty of the Spring
16:01 p.m. EDT May 25, 2003
Karma Sherpa died while being evacuated down Everest’s South Side. Yesterday, climbers helped assist Karma down from Camp II, 6450m, to Camp I, 6000m. After recruiting volunteers from EBC to come up with supplies, they proceeded to carry Karma, now unconscious, down through the icefall in the dark. On the way down he stopped breathing and was unresponsive to resuscitation efforts by his rescuers. He was pronounced dead at 7.45 pm.

Karma is the first climber to die while on the mountain this spring.
