Everest speed ascent in progress

Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa left Everest base camp less than three hours ago to try and set an Everest speed ascent record. The time to beat, 12 hrs 45 min, was set by Pemba Dorjie just days ago. He shattered the late Babu Chirri’s record by over 4 hours! Lhakpa tried earlier on the 21st, but poor weather forced him to stop.

Fabio Meraldi, a climber in the Italian Everset Speed Expedition is also going for a record this spring – a speed ascent/descent without oxygen. He left for his attempt several days ago, but was forced to stop and is expected to give it another go soon.
