Everest's Mingma Sherpa detained by Nepali police
Agu 2, 2004 11: 53 EST
Ten time summiter Mingma Sherpa was arrested at his house in Bouddha for, “suspicious activities and possessing sophisticated communication equipment.” Nepali police held him for 24 hours before releasing him.
The media and Nepali public picked up on Mingma’s arrest right away and soon the Everest Summiteers association issued a statement demanding his release.
The ‘sophisticated communication equipment’ that police accused Mingma of having was handheld radios. Not only do mountaineers use these to communicate while on the mountain, but also the handheld devices are also rather popular with the Maoists. This and information received about unknown people congregating at Mingma’s house led to his detention.
Mingma’s brother had this to say about the radios, “…we don't possess any. The sets are brought by the expeditions and taken away by them. We have done credit to Nepal as Everest climbers, we have done nothing to bring discredit to Nepal.”
Mingma was returned to his family on Sunday night and cleared by the police.
