Everest's Fastest Climber: It's Official
09:36 a.m. EDT Jul 31, 2003
Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism confirms that Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa set a world record when he climbed Mount Everest on May 26 this year in 10 hours 56 minutes and 46 seconds. Soon after Lhakpa Gelu's return from the summit, Pemba Dorjie Sherpa filed a complaint disputing Lhakpa’s time. Pemba Dorjie had climbed Mount Everest in 12 hours and 45 minutes only three days before.
The Ministry of Tourism validated Lhakpa Gelu’s ascent by reviewing photographs, interviewing witnesses, including Sherpa Apa (who holds a record 13 summits of Mount Everest) as well as a government official at Base Camp. The Ministry of Tourism maintains there is no doubt that Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa remains the record holder as the fastest climber of Mount Everest.
Lhakpa Gelu has summited Everest 10 times.
