Everest from above; Can you spot the climber?
Apr 26, 2004 13: 22 EST
OK, there aren't really any climbers in this image, though it is an amazing 1 meter detail. It's definitely worth taking a look.
Space Imaging released this high-resolution IKONOS satellite image along with a 3D fly-over of Mt. Everest. The images have been rotated for better viewing; North is down.
In the upper right of the image is the Khumbu Icefall and Western Cwm. Click on the link below for the full sized image and a 4 meter view which shows Lhotse and more of the North Ridge.
The 1,600-pound IKONOS satellite travels 423 miles above the Earth's surface at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour. It's the world's first commercial high-resolution remote sensing satellite and can see objects on the ground as small as one-meter square. IKONOS has collected more than 1 million images of the Earth's landmass, representing imagery over every continent.
Space Imaging was founded in 1994 through the financial backing of its marquee investors, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Raytheon Systems Company, Mitsubishi and Hyundai. The technologies of these investors represent some of the most advanced, successful achievements in aerospace.
