Everest South: Avalanche in C1!
May 4, 2005 08: 11 EST
Adventure Consultants guide Luis Benitez has just reported the news. This is his latest:
“Big avalanche today at C1, a few people have been hurt, a rescue effort for these folks is underway, and we will pass along details as we have them. But all is well with us here at C2, we are off to C3 tomorrow if the weather holds.”
The Mallorca expedition team members are split between BC and C2. According to what they’ve heard, the avalanche struck at 5:00 am, local time. The snow has buried about 25 out of the roughly 30 tents in C1. There may be three people injured. There are rescue parties working on the spot right now.
We will update as soon as we have further details.
Luis benitez is currently climbing Everest from the South side along with Australian Piers Buck. He aims to traverse the mountain, climbing down through the north side.
The Mallorca al Alt de Tot expedition, from Spain, share a climbing permit with Carlos Pauner.
