Everest South: 46 summits today!

Nepal’s ministry of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation has just published a press release with the official list of today’s Everest summiteers. A total number of 46 climbers (4 of them women) made it to the top of Everest through the South East ridge route- the Classic South Col route.

Koreans: Two teams on top

The first Korean to reach the summit today, at 11:15 am, local time, was . Geun Saeng Kim (38). Geun was part of the 7-member Yang Chung Everest Expedition team, led by Ki Bum Chung. Two altitude Sherpas - Wang Lakpa Sherpa and Pasang Rita Sherpa - summited along with him.

About 45 minutes later two climbers - Hyong Chul Kim and Jin Ho Seok - and three Sherpas – Dawa Wonju Sherpa, Dawa Norbu Sherpa and Peme Sherpa- of the South Korean team made it to the summit too. They were part of a 7-member team from Hanyang University Alpine Club, led by Jong Min Kim.

Iranians: Two first Muslim female summiteers

Farkhondeh Sadegh and Loleh Keshavarz, members of the women Iran Everest team, became the first muslim women who reach the top of Everest ever. Along with them were four members of the mens-team: Team leader Eghbal Aflaky Aghbelagh, Mahmed Shoaei, Azim Ghechisaz, and Reza Bahadorani.

Four altitude Sherpas accompanied the team to the summit: Shirdar Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, Chhang Dawa Sherpa, Lhakpa Sherpa, and Karma Gyalgen Sherpa

A second group within the Iranian team - led by Miroslav Caban - also succedded, with two of his 11 members summiting: Reza Zarei Toudeshici, and Jalal Cheshmeh Ghasabani.

Rotary Centennial Expedition: Local success

All three members of the Nepal’s Rotary Centennial Everest Expedition 2005 team made it to the top at 11:00 am. These were tem leader Moni Mulepati, Kami Sherpa and Pem Dorjee.

The Ministry has confirmed as well the names of the three American team members who reached the summit earlier this morning (Check our previous stories):

Alpine Ascents: David Liano along with Kami Rita Sherpa, and Vernon Tejas, along with CHewang Nima Sherpa.

IMG: Dave Hahn and Douglas Brockmeyer, along with Da Nuru Sherpa, Mingma Tenzing Sherpa, and Phu Nuru Sherpa.

Mountain Madness:Team leader Guillermo (Willie) Benegas, Christine Boskoff, Eric Garza, Dean Daniel Cardinale, and Shaunna Burke. The team’s Sherpas on the summit were: Lhakpa Norbu Sherpa (Sirdar), Mingmar Tsheri Sherpa, Ang Pasang Sherpa, Nima Unagdiki Sherpa, Jangbu Sherpa, Pemba Gyalgen Sherpa, Chongba Nuru Sherpa, Lama Babu Sherpa, and Nima Dorji Tamang.

Mountain Madness guide Willie Benegas and the strong team of Sherpas were the first climbers who summited Everest from the South side this season. As they climbed, they also fixed ropes from the Balcony.
