Everest North side Summit: Who was first?
May 21, 2005 12: 38 EST
Slovenians Маrko Lihteneker (45) and Viktor Mlinar (38), from the Seven Summits club team, summited Everest today at 12:30 local time. Expedition leader Alex Abramov states in the summit report that Marko and Viktor were the first Everest summiteers this year.
Rosa 2 hours earlier
However, Spaniard Rosa Fernandez reported she reached the top already at 10:40 am local time - along with Dawa Sherpa - and thus claiming the first summit as hers. She said that conditions were bad with poor visibility and her sat phone and camera wasn't working.
There are also reports in the media about some other climbers reaching the summit. However, details are sketchy and there seems to be contradictions.
The final word
There's a possibility that Alex meant just generally that his clients were the first of the season. Another possibility is that the Slovenians sat phone worked and they reported their summit before Rosa. The official confirmation of summits will be eventually provided by Nepal’s ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Liz Hawley and CTMA.
