Everest North: Gerfried Göschl summits W/O OXYGEN!
Jun 2, 2005 10: 10 EST
At last, we’ve got a no O2 summit on Everest. It happened from the north side!
“After waiting for many days for the right weather, Gerfried Göschl succeeded yesterday afternoon at 5.50 p.m. local time to reach the summit of Mt.Everest 8848m alone and without oxygen,” reports Susanne Borufka, from Gerfried’s home team. “He had already climbed Shisha Pangma 8027m on May 3.”
Exhausted and snowblind
“He descended in darkness for three hours to high Camp at 8200m, from where he called this morning to give us the good news. He will descend further today, but he is very exhausted after climbing two 8000m high mountains, and waiting for a long time for the best weather conditions at 6500m, where you cannot recuperate, and moreover, he is snowblind on one eye.”
“We keep our fingers crossed for his safe descent to base camp, where he will meet the Chinese "Qomolangma Action 2005" group(Chinese cleaning expedition), sponsored by Northland Professional and accompanied by Northland Team member Burkhard Felber.”
Joining the clean-up team
“The group will make one expedition every year until the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 to Mt Everest and Tibet, to collect garbage and to dispose of it in an environmentally safe way, and most important, to create the awareness of the importance on environmental protection in the country with the biggest population in the world.”
Gerfried's was the first summit on Shisha Pangma this spring. Simone Moro and Piotr Morawski summited on January 14th, in full winter.
Right after Shisha, Gerfried moved to Everest’s north side for a no O2 attempt.
Gerfried Göschl (32) was born in Styria, Austria. He is a member of Alpine Rescue Team Gesaeuse. He has summited Cho Oyu, Muztagh Ata (7546m), Aconcagua, G2 and Shisha Pangma.
