Everest NORTH side FIRST summit - Greek Olympic flag take two!
May 18, 2004 09: 29 EST
"Double success! Giorgios became the first Greek that made the summit from the Northern side! His effort, speed and right planning was crowned with complete success!" reports the team.
"He made C3 to the summit in roughly 7 hours, compared to the usual 10. 'Thank you for believing in me' was his first statement to Pavlos over the sat phone the moment he reached the top. Once again the climbers make Greece proud!" says the jubilant home team.
The first Greek stood on the top of Everest South Side after 9,5 hours of climb Saturday. Giorgios raised the Greek flag as well as the flag of the Olympics on top of the world, along with a picture of a fellow Greek climber who lost his life on Cho Oyu last fall, in preparation for Everest.
The Greeks went to Everest this year, from both sides. And in honor of the summer games that will be held Athens, the teams brought the Olympic flag with them.
The national team is fielding two expeditions, one from the north and another from the south, led by Konstantinos Tsivelekas and Panagiotis Kotronaros. They are representing the, “Hellenic Mountaineering and Climbing Federation and are fully financed by Pavlos Angelatos, a Greek resident of Canada.”
