Everest 2005 kick-off: Hello from the trail!
Mar 22, 2005 09: 07 EST
The 2005 Himalaya season has kicked off! Piotr and his Annapurna expedition are among the numerous climbers who left for Kathmandu yesterday, whilst Everest BaseCampMD Luanne Freer and her crew are already in Namche! There are several good news; RBGAN works like a charm, and there are no signs of the Maoists! Here's Luanne's latest:
Clear skies and first Dal Bhat of 2005
"What a lovely trek up from Lukla. Landed in the best of conditions – clear skies, cool, crisp air and a quick walk to Monjo (2870m) where we stayed at Hill Top Lodge and enjoyed our first dal bhat of the season. Nothing like a trail walk and fresh air for a good night’s sleep. Then off this morning in cloudy skies – fortuitous conditions for the steep walk up the trail to Namche."
Wild mountain goats
"We climbed up to 3430m in moderate snow, were treated to a view of 5 Himalayan thar (wild mountain goats) along the trail, and met some delightful children playing on a garden gate (pic on ExWeb BaseCampMD site).
After checking into the Khumbu Lodge and checking our emails, we treated ourselves to chocolate pastries at the local bakery.
Nepal is safe!
Now we’ll acclimatize for the next few days (and likely eat a few more pastries!)– important to sleep a few nights as we’ve gained 600m and want to avoid AMS. Tomorrow we’ll visit the doctors at Khunde hospital and plan a trek to the relatively remote village of Thame.
We want to mention to all of you at home that Nepal is safe, secure, and needs tourists to visit to support it’s economy, so plan your trips today; the lodge owners would love to see more visitors on the trail, and so would we."
