Everest 2005: Central North Wall expedition rescheduled for fall
Mar 22, 2005 06: 54 EST
The international expedition, "Everest: The Northern Wall 2005," scheduled for March 20 has been postponed until September, organizers of the expedition told RIA Novosti news agency.
The huge international team’s plan is to complete a ‘directissima’ (straightforward) route up the center of Everest’s North Wall. A Russian team accomplished the climb last year, but the route they opened suffered a significant deviation on the upper section of the wall. The current team will try to complete the job, this time with less than 3 m/10ft deviation!
Russian Foreign Office said ‘hold’
Expedition officials cited the uneasy political situation in Nepal as the main reason for delaying the climb.
According to expedition officials, "We received an official notice stating that on March 10 the Russian foreign ministry conducted an urgent meeting and decided to warn Russian citizens against visiting Nepal in connection with the threat of public disturbances in that country.”
Intercontinental selection
Vadimir Prihodjko, from Moscow, will lead the expedition; Kazbek Hamitsaev (Ossetia, Russian Federation) will be the climbing leader. The list of climbers has not been published yet, although approximately 40 climbers from more than 10 countries, including the United States, Australia, Armenia, Slovenia, China, Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, have been selected as candidates.
The final team will consist of roughly 20 climbers (a list of all the candidates is available on Russianclimb.com). The team hopes to finish what the 2004 Russian team started, yet this time with less than 3 m/10ft deviation! The climb will be dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the victory in World War II.
ExWeb distinguished the former Russian expedition to Everest’s Central North Wall as one of the greatest adventure endeavors in 2004.
