Everest 2005: Canada's dare to Russia, come out and play!
Feb 11, 2005 10: 36 EST
Dr. Sean Egan of the University of Ottawa is leading a big trekking team to Mount Everest BC. However, once there he will bid farewell to his trekking mates and climb the mountain. If he makes it to the top, he will become the oldest (63) Canadian Everest summiteer.
Currently climbing Aconcagua for preparation, there are no news of Sean's previous experience at 8000+.
But the "2005 Kanatek Everest expedition” is more about researching and team-building than climbing. The trip to Nepal was born as a joint venture by Ryerson and Ottawa universities, along with the main sponsor, Kanatek. Brown University ( USA & NASA funded) and the Sydney Sleep Institute (AUS) are sending large teams of researchers.
The group aims to do some research on their respective fields, from coping with hypoxia and the relationships between fitness and ageing, to tourism in the context of extreme adventure. The researchers are starting the trek from Lukla on March 30, and plan to stop at Base Camp.
Khumbu Hockey league
The team will hold a game of Hockey on the Khumbu Glacier, “just for fun, and to take the game to new heights," a Kanatek’s spokesman told ExplorersWeb.
The crew is now interested to know if there will be any Russian teams in BC by the end of April – the Canadians are looking for a rival team!
Ireland born Sean Egan is an athlete with skills in everything from soccer to boxing and beyond. Gravitating towards endurance driven athletic events, Egan has completed a number of charity walks that included a 640-mile walk from Eugene, Oregon to San Francisco, California for cancer research and a march for children’s rights that took him from Toronto, Ontario to the step of the University of Ottawa.
Egan trekked to Mt. Everest BC in 1998 and returned in 2000 to conduct research projects; now he is resuming his research work at a higher altitude: 8848m on the summit of Mount Everest. Egan works at University of Ottawa’s School of Human Kinetics.
