Spanish climber Iñaki Ochoa de Olza, German Pete Guggemos, and Austrian Christian Stangl have launched a summit bid on Dhaulagiri today May 2nd, according to Iñaki’s home team. The climbers have made their way from Base Camp (4,650 meters) to Camp 2 (6,800 meters), where they are resting now. They plan to set off for the summit tonight, weather permitting.

The weather forecast isn’t so clear-cut. However, Iñaki told his home team that the weather seems to be OK during the night and early mornings, good enough for a summit bid. If conditions turn out bad tonight, the climbers will hang out one day in C2. Ochoa says he feels “happy and in top shape.”

First try, but not necessarily the last

“We are going to try. Let’s see if it is possible to reach the summit,” reported Iñaki. “If not, we will be still on time for further attempts.”

The members of the international team were in BC after setting C2 and carrying fixed ropes up to 6800m. However, not all team members climb up and down at the same time or pace. “We share the climbing permit and meals at BC, said Iñaki. “However, each of us moves at a different pace up there, and we make our own decisions.”

Italians Romano Benet, Nives Meroi, Luca Vuerich, Mario Cedolin, Erri De Luca, Cesare Giuliani, and Roberto Allo; Slovenian Klemen Gricar, Austrian Christan Stangl, German Peter Guggemos, Spaniard Inaki Ochoa, and Ecuadorian Ivan Vallejo are currently climbing Dhaulagiri. Most of them will head for Annapurna immediately afterwards.

Iñaki Ochoa de Olza (born in Pamplona, Spain, 1967) is currently involved in completing the 14 8000+ m peaks, having already summited nine of them: Cho Oyu three times (1993, 2001, and 2004), K2 (2004), Makalu (2004), GI (1996), GII (1996), Lhotse (1999), Everest (2001), Nanga Parbat (2003), and Broad Peak (2003). He has also summited Shisha Pangma Central (1995).
