Dhaulagiri: Fourth summit bid aborted
May 19, 2005 14: 44 EST
There is nothing else to be done on Dhaulagiri. The Italians aborted their summit bid earlier today at 7700m, while the rest of the summit team had already thrown in the towel. After coping with numerous setbacks, the team faced an obstacle they could not overcome: The snow slope below the summit was in an extremely dangerous condition. Therefore, they had no other choice but to turn around. All climbers are now safely back in BC.
Italians Romano Benet, Nives Meroi, and Luca Vuerich; Spaniard Inaki Ochoa, Ecuadorian Ivan Vallejo, and Austrian Christian Stangl set off from BC on Tuesday the 17th. Snow conditions were miserable, and by afternoon a storm had hit Dhaulagiri's slopes, according to Planet Mountain.
That’s enough!
That was enough for Ochoa and Vallejo, who returned to BC. Stangl retreated as well, although he stopped for the night in C1, and reached BC this morning.
Romano, Nives, and Luca still tried their best, and reached Camp 2, at 7300 m for the night. This morning they resumed the climb up to the summit slopes, which proved impossible to cross.
Italians Romano Benet, Nives Meroi, Luca Vuerich, Austrian Christan Stangl, Spaniard Inaki Ochoa, and Ecuadorian Ivan Vallejo were climbing Dhaulagiri. Most of them will head for Annapurna immediately afterwards.
Mario Cedolin, Erri De Luca, Cesare Giuliani, and Roberto Allo; Slovenian Klemen Gricar, also part of the international team, have abandoned the mountain.
