Cybercast from a great but lonely walk
Jan 5, 2005 20: 29 EST
Diego is out on a lonely off the beaten track walk in Tibet. Last we checked on him was three weeks ago as he was out with Luck and Fortune trying to...well just walk. The travel agent however imposed various vehicles on him, claiming rules and regulations. So the last word was; "I am now inside the dark back of a truck getting a ride to Lhatse."
Diego's mountain
"The Great Walker" arrived Kathmandu, Nepal October 24. His aim was to walk to Mount Kailash, in Tibet, to retrace the steps of Nain Singh. He would walk to Lhasa, then follow a river to the mountain. At the check point to Tibet, Diego was turned back by the police. Now he's trying to get back - from Lhasa.
He's already in Shigatse. But still a far way from Mount Kailash. His last dispatch was on New Years Eve:
Tonight will be a great night
"I have the feeling that tonight will be a great night;" I recall thinking out loud.
The stay in Shigatse proved to be a bit too long, and I don't just mean it because of my ungraceful dive onto the floor's tiles.
When you've been pushing your body for too long and don't give it much rest, your aches and pains don't surface that much because your body knows that it will be active again soon. But when you rest it long enough your body feels ready to relax thus all 'disfunctionalities' begin to emerge; especially if all you do during your resting period is to lay in bed and do not stretch as you well should.
I knew the sauna was not the best
My feet's wounds had soaked well too much and were now feeling a bit too sensitive inside my not so good boots. I knew the sauna was not the best for my wounds but I thought it might open them enough for the iodine and alcohol to penetrate and cure the infection without me needing to take antibiotics.
My calf had by now began to show signs of wear and tear after I had been walking like a robot for the past week due to not being able to walk with a proper 'heal to toe' motion because of the pain inflicted to my wounds by the back of the shoe.
Well prepared for the unexpected
My fear of losing anymore weight and those past 3-4 nights without proper food led me to buy a whole bunch of nuts, raisins, chocolates and cereal biscuits which would be nourishing me till the next supermarket, but in turn made the pack a bit heavier.
With 2005 on sight I somehow felt that tonight would be a great night.
It did turn out to be a very special and different night form any previous one. But 'Great?' No; it was not a great nor warm night at all. But this time I had come well prepared for the unexpected."

The Himalayan mountaineering season is over for now, but there are trekkers around, and one such is Diego Azubel. Diego is a great walker. In 2000/2001 he traversed China on foot along the Great Wall. The trip took 15 months and covered 4000 km.
This time around, Diego arrived Kathmandu, Nepal October 24. His aim was to walk to Mount Kailash, in Tibet, to retrace the steps of Nain Singh. He would walk to Lhasa, then follow a river to the mountain. At least that was the plan, until the police got involved.
Diego is among the first world travelers using Contact technology. Check his pics, positions, and altitudes as he strolls his way across the passes - and read his story of the Maoists impact on Himalayan trekkers.
