Chomo-Lonzo North summit reached!
May 9, 2005 19: 04 EST
Christian Trommsdorff, Yannick Graziani, and Patrick Wagnon reached the North Summit of Chomo-Lonzo (7.199m according to the team’s maps) on Saturday, May 8th. The team had spent the previous night in a bivouac at 6850m in strong winds and bitter cold conditions. Progress was especially difficult on some smooth rock outcrops at 6.950 and 7.000m.
Central summit resisted the first assault
The other two teams consisting of Christophe Moulin, Yann Bonneville, Aymeric Clouet, and Stéphane Benoist, Patrick Glairon-Rappaz renounced to reach the Central summit via the NE ridge due to poor snow conditions.
All teams are now in BC recovering and discussing different options to climb the evasive central summit and perhaps to traverse to the main summit.
Under the leadership of Christophe Moulin of the FFME, 7 mountaineers have been chosen to compete on two virgin summits of Chomo-Lonzo, a satellite of Makalu. Chomo-Lonzo's main summit (7,790 m) was first climbed in 1954 by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy as a pre-climb for Makalu. The central summit (7,540 m) and the NW summit (7,195 m) have never been climbed.
The expedition members are: Patrick Wagnon, Christian Trommsdorff, Yannick Graziani, Christophe Moulin, Stephan Benoist, Patrice Glairon-Rappaz, Yann Bonneville and Aymeric Clouet.
