Big guns summited Makalu this morning
19:54 p.m. EDT May 14, 2003
Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism has announced that four climbers reached the summit of Makalu, 8485m, this morning via the Northwest Ridge.

Cering Doje, Rena, and Bianba Zaxi now each have 11, 8000m peaks summited. The fourth climber, Akbu, now has 10, 8000m summits – Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Shisha Pangma, Cho Oyu, Gasherbrum II, Manaslu, Nanga Parbat, Kangchenjunga, and Everest.

All four of these climbers are going for the 14, 8000m peaks in the world. Collectively, they now have 43, 8000m summits between them – a very experienced team.

Makalu just makes the “Big 5,” being the fifth tallest mountain in the world. (Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu.) Only ten people in the world have ascended the world’s 14, 8000m peaks.
