Annapurna second update - more details
May 18, 2005 14: 15 EST
As the shocking news of this morning's Annapurna accident is settling in, clarification of details are beginning to arrive at ExWeb. Alberto Pirovano, President of Spiders' Lecco informed us earlier today that the climber with Mondinelli wasn't Christian Kuntner, but Christian Gobbi, and Gobbi is well. The two alpinists didn't summit.
Other reports said that the avalanche might have been a serac, falling on the climbers on their ascent up.
Falling serac hit rear team
The latest from the "Spider's" is that in a phone call to Italian Radio24, Silvio Mondinelli confirmed that Italian Gobbi, Camandona, and himself were between CII and CIII with Australian Andrew Lock and two alpinists from Colorado (one doctor) when a serac fell down. The alpinists who were struck followed not far behind. The front team hurried back down, to rescue their mates, and returned to C2 an hour and a half later. Christian Kuntner died in their arms.
Spiders' Lecco Mountain club was born 60 years ago. The three Italian summiteers from the May 12 Annapurna North climb (with Viesturs/Veikka) are among the members of the club. Other famous alpinist's of the club are Walter Bonatti, Riccardo Cassin, Casimiro Ferrari (D), Carlo Mauri (D) and Wyoming climber Dave Carman.
The 60 years old Mountain Club Ragni di Lecco "Spiders Lecco" is located in the Northern Italy alpine province of Lecco, by the pictoresque Lake Como.
