A hero's welcome for Valery and Yuri
08:07 a.m. EST Nov 17, 2003
Check out the smiles on these guys’ faces! Babanov and Koshelenko are back in Moscow after their first ascent of the former highest unclimbed mountain in the world – Nuptse East, 7804m. Friends and family greeted the two Russians at the Moscow airport when they arrived on November 15th – flowers and champagne for everyone! They did a few interviews right there in the airport for waiting television cameras, as well as back in their sponsor, Bask’s offices.

Tomorrow, there will be a press conference that the two climbers will hold, followed by a big party on Wednesday, November 19th in Moscow. If there is something else the Russian know how to do than climb, it’s have a good time – the Vodka will surely be flowing on Wednesday!

This was Valery Babanov's third attempt on the peak in one year. Prior to Nuptse East, 7804m, Babanov made a remarkable solo first ascent on northern wall of Meru Central peak (the ‘shark fin’) in 2001. Joining him for this third and finaly successful ascent was Yuri Koshelenko.
